Equity in the Community

In early 2025, Equity Alliance of Michigan partnered with the University of Michigan’s Urban and Regional Planning Capstone Studio for a semester-long project focused on the Midwest Tireman neighborhood. This collaboration engaged graduate students in developing actionable strategies to address community priorities, including food security, housing, resilience, and economic development.

Guided by community input and supported by EAOM staff, the student team worked closely with block clubs and residents to ensure that their recommendations reflected real needs and aspirations. The capstone project not only provided valuable research and planning tools for EAOM but also offered students the opportunity to apply their academic training in a real-world, equity-driven context—demonstrating the power of university-community partnerships in building stronger, more resilient neighborhoods.

The Midwest Tireman Neighborhood Framework is a collaborative planning initiative led by the City of Detroit Planning Department, with strong partnership from Equity Alliance of Michigan (EAOM), neighborhood block clubs, and local residents. The framework is designed to guide revitalization in the Tireman area while ensuring community voices are central to every step of the process.

By addressing priorities such as food security, housing stability, economic development, and neighborhood safety, the framework provides a roadmap for equitable growth. As part of the City of Detroit Master Plan, this initiative ensures that the Tireman neighborhood is not only included in citywide development strategies but also shaped by the lived experiences and aspirations of its residents.
